Types of Pin

The pins produced by our company mainly include the following types:

Dowel Pin

A dowel pin is a cylindrical fastener, typically made of metal, wood, or plastic, used to join or align two or more components together. They are inserted into pre-drilled holes and act as a locating or holding mechanism.

Locking Quick Release Pin

A locking quick release pin is a fastener designed for rapid assembly and disassembly, featuring a button-activated locking mechanism that prevents accidental release. It uses spring-loaded balls or detents that extend from the pin shaft to lock it in place, and a button on the handle allows for controlled release.

Knurled Dowel Pins

Applications of Pin

Furniture and Cabinetry

Dowel pins are commonly used in the assembly of furniture and cabinetry, providing a precise and secure connection between the components.

Machinery and Equipment

Dowel pins are widely used in the manufacturing and assembly of machinery and equipment, ensuring precise alignment and secure connections between the components.

Automotive and Aerospace

Dowel pins are essential components in the automotive and aerospace industries, providing precise and durable connections that can withstand high levels of stress and vibration.

Medical Devices and Electronics

Dowel pins are used in the manufacturing and assembly of medical devices and electronics, providing a non-metallic and precise connection that can withstand various environmental conditions.

Materials of Pins

18-8 / 300 Stainless Steel
Dowel pins made from 18-8 / 300 series stainless steel offer excellent corrosion resistance, making them ideal for environments with limited moisture exposure. These pins are versatile for general-purpose applications, ensuring components remain aligned and secure without significant risk of rust or degradation.

303 Stainless Steel
Dowel pins crafted from 303 stainless steel provide excellent machinability, making them easy to manufacture to tight tolerances. This is particularly beneficial when high volumes of pins are required.

316 Stainless Steel
Dowel pins made from 316 stainless steel offer superior corrosion resistance, making them suitable for harsh or corrosive environments, such as marine or chemical applications, where precision and durability are critical.

400 / 416 Stainless Steel
Dowel pins made from 400 / 416 stainless steel offer high hardness levels after heat treatment and increased wear resistance. This makes them well-suited for high-stress applications where strength and durability are essential.

A1, A2, and A4 Stainless Steel
Dowel pins made from A1, A2, and A4 stainless steel grades offer different levels of corrosion resistance and hardness. A1 and A2 are suited for moderate environments, while A4 is optimal for highly corrosive conditions.

Alloy Steel Plain
Dowel pins made from alloy steel with a plain finish are highly valued for their exceptional strength and resistance to deformation. This makes them ideal for heavy-duty applications. The plain finish ensures a smooth surface that can be easily integrated into various assemblies without additional coatings or treatments.

Alloy Steel Phosphate
Dowel pins crafted from alloy steel with a phosphate finish offer the same strength and resistance to deformation as their plain finish counterparts but with added benefits. The phosphate coating provides enhanced corrosion resistance, making these pins suitable for environments where exposure to moisture or chemicals is also a concern.

Brass
Brass Dowel pins offer corrosion resistance, non-magnetic properties, good electrical and thermal conductivity, ease of machining, and aesthetic appeal. They are often used where there’s a need to avoid sparking or in applications with lower strength requirements.

Steps for Installing a Cotter Pin

Make sure the components to be fastened are exactly lined up, then smoothly push the cotter pin through the hole prepared in the fastening parts. While doing this, be very careful with the forked end of the cotter pin, ensuring it faces the intended bending direction.

Once the cotter pin is inserted, use pliers to gently grip the split end and slowly bend it back into the component to form a secure latch. This process is as much about controlling the force to avoid damaging the cotter pin and fastening the part as it is about making sure the split end fits snugly on the part surface.

If the cotter pin appears too long after insertion, extending beyond the component's boundary, it should be trimmed with tools such as diagonal cutters. Be very careful when trimming to avoid creating sharp edges that could lead to accidents or component jamming.

After trimming is complete, check the fixing of the cotter pin again to ensure that everything is properly installed.

FAQ

Q: How does a cotter pin work?

A: A cotter pin is a simple fastener that's used to secure a bolt in place. Consisting of a U-shaped piece of metal, it's inserted through the hole of a bolt, after which the ends are twisted together. The cotter pin secures the bolt in place so that it's less likely to loosen and come out.

Q: How many times can you reuse a cotter pin?

A: Cotter pins should not generally be reused. While they typically consist of strong and pliable materials, they're typically fairly stiff and unyielding once deformed. This creates a reliable locking mechanism that can be relied on indefinitely. If you remove a cotter pin, the bends of the pin become more brittle.

Q: What is the correct way to install a cotter pin?

A: Using a cotter pin effectively involves choosing the correct size and material for the application, inserting it through the hole in the bolt or shaft, and then bending the prongs outward to secure it. Pliers are typically used to ensure a firm and stable fit.

Q: How do you calculate cotter pins?

A: First, measure the pin's length from the shortest prong from the neck of the cotter pin where it is inserted into the hole gauge. Then, measure the diameter of the shank and each prong to ensure they can be bent properly after insertion. Cotter pins are essential components in a wide variety of industrial applications.

Q: How do you lock a cotter pin?

A: Using your preferred tool, bend the cotter pin's two tines in opposite directions. Rather than pointing straight down, the tines should point horizontally and away from each other. By bending the tines, the cotter pin won't be able to fall out of the metal rod.

Q: What are the advantages of cotter pins?

A: One key advantage of cotter pins is their inherent simplicity. With their straightforward design, they can be easily installed and detached without the necessity for any specific tools. Furthermore, they offer robust links that prevent the secured pieces from becoming loose or disassembled.
